entanglement with a haunted forest
an installation by claudia bosse
with a musical commentary by günther auer,
developed for
mahler forum 2024 curated by felicitas thun-hohenstein and section.a
with entanglement with a haunted forest, claudia bosse develops an artistic installation between the built and the grown, between the present and the past around the gustav mahler
komponierhäuschen in maiernigg on lake wörthersee in carinthia as part of mahler forum 2024. the installation is a continuation of the multi-part series haunted landscape/s, which is dedicated to wounded landscapes.
ghosts dwell in the woods when it gets dark,
emerge from the bark and trunks,
from the leaves and from the earth
and remind us of the souls.
the forest brings together living things and myths - a myth also surrounds the gustav mahler komponierhäuschen in maiernigg. it was here that gustav mahler set to music poems written by the poet friedrich rückert for his children who had died of scarlet fever. mahler's daughter died here three years later, after which he never returned.
entanglement with a haunted forest seeks proximity to non-humans and humans and evokes their presence with objects made of bones, stones, threads, fabrics and latex. found objects interact with materials brought along and are left to the forest and its accesses and climatic changes. possible creatures from the combination of these materials colonise the space, communicate with those present or absent and will change over the following months, leave traces or carry traces themselves. a fragile constellation of objects in a lively environment, exposed to light, darkness, rain, sun and wind and in constant cooperation with the elements.
claudia bosse exposes with a poetic gesture, makes visible and brings together what seems unrelated and yet is. her connections and objects lead along the paths of the grown, the drawn, the present and the past. together with günther auer, who has been developing sound settings in resonance with and for her installations and walk-in spaces for over ten years, claudia bosse enters into an artistic dialogue with the forest and its interventions of wind, rain and people for the commissioned work entanglement with a haunted forest during her two-week stay on site, interweaving moss, bones and wood with memories and events. a cooperation with the growing, the torn out, the decaying. a search for traces, a dialogue between micro-events, the small, the hidden, close to the ground, in the heights and wide perspectives. all this on the path cut by the storm or in the undergrowth, between lying trunks and mossy stones - upright and tilted, set up and torn out. different times of decay. |
