in 1970, heiner müller wrote «mauser», his most consequent theatre text as critical review of bertolt brecht's learning plays.
the text unfolds the revolutionary formula «death to the enemies of the revolution» into its deadly dialectic, a seemingly inescapeable logic: in the last consequence, the formula as revolutionary law directs itself against the revolution – the dialectics of killing as repressed founding act of each state. in the GDR, the text was forbidden – suspiciously stalinistic and at the same time counter-revolutionary.
theatercombinat and director claudia bosse realised heiner müller's «mauser» in autumn 2003 with an ensemble of young actors of the national theatre of montenegro as extending space/movement choreography. originally created for the 70ies architecture of yugoslavia, a disused swimming stadion for 3000 spectators in podgorica – until 1993 named «titograd» -, capital of a region which was at the time divided between the stately construction of serbia and montenegro and the urge to found a national state of montenegro, a new version was created then especially for the different spatial situation at kampnagel hamburg. |

in the two bigger halls of kampnagel, a spatial system embracing three related rooms was installed. after having worked together in montenegro, dealing with the different methods of the actors of theatercombinat and the national theatre of montenegro as one collective chorus, this chorus has been divided for the hamburg version into two separate choruses according to the two different languages and related to two different spaces. in a connecting third room, parallel to the choregraphies of the performers, documentary material from podgorica was shown.
in both versions, the spectators were invited to move freely through the space to take up their own positions and choose different visual and acoustic perspectives. the encountering of different cultural and theatrical positions and of spectators and actors, understood as process in a space without the hierarchy of the division of stage and audience, mutually questioned the site-specific contexts of theatre work and the possibilities of their transfer.
the montenegrian-german coproduction was the closure of a coproduction series with eastern-european theatres, initiated by kampnagel and stretching in four parts over a 2 years period of time, and of theatercombinat's practical research of ways of contemporary political theatre. |
